Winter Footcare Tips

Foot care for Winter

The most common foot ailments during the colder months are dry and cracked skin around the heels. The easiest home solution is a good moisturizer applied in the morning and night just after bathing. I would suggest a moisturizer without alcohol which can cause even more dryness.

I also try to avoid hot showers (even though they are wonderful to help get warm in the winter) and avoid non-moisturizing soaps.  A good humidifier will also helps keep the skin’s moisture.

Wearing comfortable shoes…

Footwear that fits properly and allows enough room, not just for toes but also the width of the foot is important for foot health.  It reduces the amount of pressure on the feet which improves circulation. Thick soles also reduce pressure on your feet, and joints of the knees and ankles by providing a softer landing with each step, especially on hard surfaces.

Ailments from uncomfortable shoes…

With blisters being one of the first and most common ailments, wearing improperly fitted footwear will make is easier to develop bunions, corns, hammer toe, heel spears and ingrown nails, all of which are painful.  Wearing comfortable footwear as often as possible can help avoid developing unnecessary pain.

Improved circulation…

will help prevent spider or varicose veins around the ankle and heel areas as well as the heaviness often felt during long periods of sitting or standing.
